The Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR4) or commonly known as Industry 4.0, which is marked by a fusion of technologies that is blurring the lines between the physical, digital, and biological spheres, has not only posed opportunities, but also challenges to the ways we live and work.  One of the consequences of the recent technological advances, particularly the digital one, is that it has disrupted the role of education, notably civic education, and its educators.  Civic education curriculum need to keep pace with these technological changes and teachers need support to recognize the benefits of the innovative technologies in transforming the education. Moreover, students who are often faster in adopting and using various new digital products and services need to have a good understanding of how to use them responsibly.

The 2ndAnnual Civic Education Conference (2nd ACEC) aims to bring together leading experts, educators, researchers, lecturers, teachers and students to explore new perspectives in civic education in relation to the Industry 4.0 issues. It is an interdisciplinary platform for educators, practitioners, researchers and students to present and discuss the most recent concerns, trends, innovations as well as problems and solutions in the fields of civic education.

My research relates to education about nation in Indonesia, where there has been a successful transition to democracy but the terms of the nation itself and the basis of national cohesion are still under negotiation. In this context, religion has taken on a very public role and has been foregrounded in questions of belonging and identity in this plural society.  This case provides an interesting example of a majority Muslim democracy educating citizens to live in a religiously plural society, where I am viewing education as an arena for debates about the basis of the nation, its incorporation of religion, and varying models for pluralist coexistence.

While the importance of education is typically recognized in attempts to combat extremism and produce tolerant citizens in a plural society, little is understood about the process itself. My research takes an anthropological approach to examine education in local cultural frameworks and gain a better understanding of what democracy and religion mean in a local context, and how the relationship between the two creates particular visions of nation and citizenship. This study has important ramifications for policy initiatives because of its focus on how schools contribute to socializing views of nation and a public ethic for engaging religious diversity.
