On behalf of the ACEC2019 organizing committee, we warmly welcome you to the 2nd Annual Civic Education Conference in the lovely city of BandaAceh. The conference theme, “Reshaping Civic Education in the Fourth Industrial Revolution”, has been carefully chosen to reflect our deep concern about the ubiquity and pervasive use of all things digital in relation to a variety of ethical dilemmas from civic education perspectives.
While the political ferocity in today’s climate necessitates civic education to boost students’ civic participation to contribute to the public good, the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0 or 4IR), particularly the advances in digital technologies, has enabled students to engage through interactive dialogues and debates without having to be guided by traditional leaders and institutions.
In this context, civic education has an important role to play. It could facilitate students’ civic learning by tapping into the opportunities and dealing with the challenges of Industry 4.0. They need access to high-quality civic media literacy and positive discussions as well as actively participate in the democratic politics. This conference offers opportunities to teachers, lecturers, researchers, educators, policy-makers, activists and journalists to reflect upon and have lively discussions on the foregoing issues.
To put a conference of this magnitude together is not a small task. It has been made possible by the support and hard work of many people. We would like to thank Professor Syamsu Rizal, Rector of Syiah Kuala University and Professor R. Asep Kadarohman,Rector of Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia for their wisdom and guidance. Likewise expressed respect and gratitude to Ir. Nova Iriansyah, MTas Governor of Aceh (ad Interim) for hospitality and guidance. We would also like to thank all the co-hosting institutions for their support. We appreciate the enthusiasm and assistance of Professor Sapriya, Head, Department of Civic Education Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, Dr. Sanusi, Head, Department of Pancasila and Civic Education, Syiah Kuala University, and Professor Udin S. Winataputra, Head of the Association of Pancasila and Civic Education Profession. Last but not the least, thanks to all the guest speakers, participants and moderators for their contributions as well as our team, both lecturers and students, who have offered their generous time to make this conference a great success.
